5 Tips To Live Luxuriously On A Budget

Between student loans, a mortgage, and the high cost of living in general, it’s no wonder we rarely have money left to spend on ourselves, let alone on a little opulence.

For many, the definition of luxury is excess—the more you have, the richer you feel. Truth is: luxury is not about quantity; it’s the quality that matters. The most important thing is to believe you deserve a luxurious life. Many people, women especially, tend to feel guilty if they invest $20 dollars in themselves. But what’s so wrong with spending on ourselves? Luxury shouldn’t just be reserved for the rich and famous.

There are ways us budget savvy folk live luxuriously without being rich or putting ourselves in debt, and you can too. Here are 5 tips to live luxuriously on a budget.

  1. Declutter. Ridding of clutter will simplify your life. You know why I love cleaning out my closet and getting rid of clothes I no longer wear? Because when I’m done, it actually feels like I have more clothes in my closet. That’s because there are pieces I totally forgot about. And the great thing is, everything left in your closet fits so you won’t waste time trying on a million different outfits ( decluttering can save you from getting depressed when nothing fits, too). Also, many people tend to shop mindlessly and accidentally purchase duplicate items (my parents are infamous for this at the grocery store. Who needs 12 boxes of Nutri Grain bars? I mean, really?). Going through what you already own will give you a fresh idea of what you already have and what you need, and save yourself money. Starting with clearing out your clutter will clear the way to begin your journey of living luxuriously.
  2. Decide what you can afford. Now that you only have the things you need, next examine your personal financial situation carefully. Determine what will be the highest quality product you can afford. Make important products your priority. What those products are, are up to you. Maybe technology or appearance isn’t your top priority but having a beautiful home is? Maybe you spend the most you can afford on a quality couch. Or maybe how you look and your confidence is priority to you? Maybe you prefer to have a quality name brand handbag or the latest gadget over a nice dining room set? It’s all preference. If you don’t know what is important to you, you will constantly chase what is new. Make a list of your priorities and don’t compare them to others. This is your list.
  3. Don’t give it up. Swap it out! If you like to get pampered, you probably enjoy a good facial or spa treatment. Those can be pretty costly. Most esthetician schools offer treatments from students dirt cheap or even free. I know, the idea of someone inexperienced working near precious organs may scare you just a bit. The good news is, students are closely monitored and usually at an advanced level if they’re working on clients. So don’t lose out on your relaxation time, just cut the cost.
  4. Swap expensive gym memberships for the great outdoors. I love yoga as much as the next person, but monthly classes can cost a whopping $200-300. With a gym membership, you’ll get more bang for your buck ( and some memberships include classes like yoga, kickboxing, etc.) but it’s still a nice chunk of change. Why not save your money and still get a great workout? During the warmer months, go running, hiking, or swimming outdoors. It’s a great way to connect with nature and sweat it out. Some parks even have pull-up bars or obstacle courses. The colder months, take advantage of that pricey Smart TV or laptop by finding free workout videos online (I’ve seen it all from Jillian Michaels workouts to Vinyasa yoga). You can find a variety of free videos on On Demand, too.
  5. Rent instead of buy.  Renting, it’s not just for apartments anymore. If you have a weakness for designer handbags and dresses, you have an option to rent rather than buy. The cost is a fraction of buying the items new. This is especially perfect for people who don’t like to wear the same thing twice ( that’ll drain your wallet), and you can upgrade to new style each season without incurring additional costs.
