Decorating Your Starter Home: What You Need To Know

Congratulations on your new home! This is an exciting time in your life but could also be quite intimidating. Don’t let yourself get stressed. Follow some simple tips to help you furnish your new home.

Pick a style—If you’re not sure what style you like, skim through photos and magazine clippings of other homes. Collect your favorites. You’ll want your home to be cohesive so go through your pictures: is there a common theme, color, or pattern throughout any of the pictures you collected? Say for instance, maybe all the photos you collected have a piece of wicker furniture?  Perhaps you like to do a beach theme in your living room–you could tie in wicker chairs or baskets, or use splashes of mint, sea green, or blue. White walls and chestnut brown furniture also add a ‘lightness’ to the room for a coastal feel. You’ll want the room to flow; just bear in mind, you might be more limited in space than the style in the photo you like. You likely won’t be able to replicate it identically, but again, use the photos to stir up a general idea. You can pull your color palette from the flooring, artwork, a rug, or simply because it’s your favorite.

To get a better understanding of design styles, use the HGTV Design Styles Defined. They offer simple descriptions and pictures so you can get a better idea of what fits your style.

3Minute-3

Budget—Sit down and figure out your budget. Remember: you don’t have to do it all at once. If your entire house is in disarray–you may feel stressed and anxious. Taking it one step at a time will seem less daunting. With one room completely finished, at least you’ll feel like you have an escape from a disorderly house.

Draw it out— It’s a good idea to sketch out  a floor plan. If you don’t have an artistic knack (and it doesn’t have to be perfect, just a rough sketch), LutherSales offers a “Room Sketcher” that takes the pencil work out for you. It’s easy to use and free to anyone. You can try it here.

Measure— It’s important that you measure your space. That means everything (entrance ways, stairwells, etc.). We also provide a Home Planner with tips for how to properly measure entrance ways for furniture delivery. Read more. Keep those measurements with you when you go furniture shopping. Don’t just assume because it looks small in a giant showroom that it won’t look massive in your living room. Taking the extra time out to measure properly is worth it and can save you a lot of aggravation in the end.

Cutting cost—It is not advised to skimp on furniture. Invest in high-quality pieces that will be comfortable and long lasting. Keep in mind, even if you end up moving from an apartment to a house, that couch will likely go with you–even if it finds a spot in the house (such as the basement or bedroom). If you need to cut cost on something, do it on the accessories. Throw pillows, lamps, and those other little touches you may want to have can be purchased for less at stores like Home Goods, Target, and Walmart.

If you’re having a hard time, you can always hire an interior designer. But overall, have fun. There’s no better way to find out what works for you than by experimenting with styles. Yes, you do want to try and get furniture pieces that can easily transition should you move one day, but most things: bedsheets, pillows, lamps, even curtains–are changed in a few years anyway.

If you have bad credit and need furniture, we have bad credit financing available for applicants that fall below the minimum qualifications. LutherSales is a true financial wellness solution; offering you the products you need to furnish your house while restoring your credit by reporting to credit bureaus. We offer you the ability to buy now, pay later, with low budget friendly payments. Approval is based on your work history (not your credit score). Applying takes no more than 3-minutes. You don’t always have the option to save as much as you would like. Sometimes, things happen in life, requiring you to purchase expensive things at perhaps, inopportune times. We understand this and that’s why our motto is “Luxury Made Easy.” We want you and your family to be able to acquire brand name products–whether it’s a need or desire–without overburdening you with hefty payments.
