Your Holiday Memories Are Too Important

Over the past decade no art has more prominent in our everyday lives than photography. With the adoption of smartphones that make photography part of every day life we begin to take the art for granted. However, even the most casual of photographers will find greater satisfaction with the quality of their photographs by investing in a camera and learning the basics of photography.

Smartphones are definitely convenient and easy to use and the image quality measured in pixels can be impressive, but they are not  the best tool for creating lasting treasures.

A camera will:

  • take photos that are in sharper focus.
  • create better photos in low light situations.
  • make the subject of the photo look better, whether your subject is a person, animal, or landscape.
  • capture fast movement like a person playing tennis without the photo being blurry.
  • zoom in on distant subjects like a child on a surfboard or a bird in a tree without the photo becoming blurry.

About Cameras

There are two types of cameras: “point-and-shoot” and Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras. Point-and-shoot cameras are smaller in size and weight than a DSLR and have built-in lenses. DSLR cameras provide the highest quality images, and feature the ability to change lenses based upon your needs.

With a DSLR, you are looking through a viewfinder when shooting a picture, while with a “point-and-shoot”, you either look at a video screen on the camera’s back or through a smaller electronic viewfinder.

cameraHow a camera is better than a smart phone:

  1. You can capture sharp images of distant subjects:   Most smartphones like the iPhone 6 feature a built-in lens which does not actually zoom. Instead, smartphones create the illusion of zooming by cropping in on a section of your photo. This “electronic zoom” results in a loss of quality.
Real cameras use optical zoom lenses which do not produce these negative side effects. In addition, the “electronic zoom” on a smartphone camera typically is far less than the real zoom offered by most cameras. Plus, superior lens quality in cameras result in clearer images of subjects both near or far.
  2. Photos are less blurry because of lens stabilization: “Camera phones are difficult to keep steady as the hand naturally shakes, resulting in blurred images. Cameras are easier to hold with two hands or mount on a pos ot tripod. Many cameras have much better image stabilization than smartphones as well.
  3. Better photos in low light situations: All cameras have sensors whose size determines the amount of light used to create the image. Normally, the bigger the sensor, the better the quality. These larger sensors make it easier to produce a quality image in low-light situations like night time shots when you don’t want to use a flash. Point-and-shoot cameras and DSLR cameras have larger sensors than smartphone cameras, so they will always produce a better photograph.phone

A camera’s megapixel number is often touted as a measure of its quality. Megapixels determine the resolution of the image. The more megapixels, the sharper the image, and the larger it can be blown up before distortion sets in.
While megapixels do matter, sensor size actually has a greater impact on image quality. If you compare an image taken with a 12 megapixel smartphone and a 12 megapixel point-and-shoot, the point-and-shoot’s image will be sharper and more pleasing to the eye due to its larger sensor.

A Quality Print is a lasting treasure.

There is an expectation that digital photographs are permanent but that’s not really true. It has become common to save photos to hard drives and/or upload to social media sites but hard drives often fail over time and many social networks have come and gone. Even the big ones like Facebook and Instagram have no guarantee of long term stability.
